Exchange of Opinions on the Jeddah Business Environment

On November 23, a meeting was held at the Consulate-General of Japan to discuss the main issues facing Japanese companies in Makkah and Madinah Regions, inviting officials from the Ministry of Investment of Saudi Arabia and Japanese companies in the region. Eleven representatives from Japanese companies and three officials from the Ministry of Investment of Saudi Arabia participated in the meeting. In addition to Consul-General Shimmura and other relevant staff from the Consulate-General, Mr. Kawahara, Minister and Deputy Chief of Mission, and other staff members of the Economic Affairs Section at the Embassy of Japan in Riyadh also participated.
1. At the meeting, officials from the Ministry of Investment gave a presentation on the various services provided by the Ministry to foreign investors, as well as the Ministry's efforts to promote investment in Saudi Arabia. In addition, Ministry officials stated that they have appointed an official dedicated to provide consultation services to Japanese companies and that they would like to play a role as a bridge between Japanese businessmen and the relevant ministries.
2. An an overview of the specific issues that the participating companies are facing in their business environment was also presented, based on the questionnaire survey conducted prior to this meeting, and then discussion was held on these business issues and their major examples, and the support that the Ministry of Investment in Saudi Arabia can provide to resolve these issues, followed by the Q&A session.
3. In his opening remarks, Consul-General Shimmura referred to the recent visit by Minister of Investment of Saudi Arabia to Japan and the 6th Japan-Saudi Vision 2030 Ministerial Meeting held in Tokyo, and said that today's meeting is one of such bilateral joint efforts, and that
in order to increase the quantitative presence of Japanese companies in Makkah and Madinah Regions whose number is around 30, it is important to solve the problems they are facing.
