Japanese Scholars participated in OIC conference

Professor HOSAKA Shuji, President of Japan Association for Middle East Studies (JAMES) and Dr. IKEHATA Fukiko of Ritsumeikan University, together with Mr. SHIMMURA Consul-General and Representative of Japan to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), have participated in a hybrid seminar hosted by the OIC titled “Connecting Further at the Post-Covid-19 Contemporary World: Enhancing Dialogue between the Islamic World and Other Great Civilizations” on 10 October.
In his presentation titled “Responses of Japanese Religions to Covid-19”, Professor Hosaka referred to revival of old religious rituals of Japan amid Covid-19 pandemic and the role of folk religions in contemporary society, and explained that Covid-19 has triggered a revival of Japan's long-established folk beliefs in a new guise.
During their stay in Jeddah, they also exchanged opinions with representatives of the OIC and its affiliated institutions such as Center for Voice of Wisdom, International Islamic Fiqh Academy, and Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission. Dr. Ikehata is a researcher specializing in the study of OIC, and these meetings were very fruitful in further enriching the cooperation between Japan and the OIC.
